Photoshop Error: Freezing or Lagging While Editing

byAkshaya sahu -May 14, 2025

There are a few reasons why Photoshop might lag or freeze:

Insufficient RAM: Photoshop uses your computer’s RAM for running and processing tasks. If you’re working with heavy files or multitasking with other programs, Photoshop can run out of available memory.

  • Large File Sizes: Editing massive files with a lot of layers or high-resolution images can cause Photoshop to slow down or freeze as it struggles to keep up.
  • Overloaded Preferences: Photoshop's preferences may not be set up for your system's capabilities.
  • Background Processes: Having too many programs running or multiple Adobe applications open can sap your system resources.
  • Graphics Processor Problems: In certain situations, the graphic card's driver may be the cause of performance problems if it's out of date or incompatible.

The Solution

To repair Photoshop freezing or lagging, try these solutions:

1. Increase RAM Allocation

Go to Edit > Preferences > Performance (Mac: Photoshop > Preferences > Performance).

Under Memory Usage, move the RAM slider to enable Photoshop to use more memory (but don't overdo it—leave some for other applications).

Restart Photoshop.

2. Optimize File Sizes

Lower the file resolution if you don't require super high resolution (such as lowering from 600dpi to 300dpi).

Flatten or merge unnecessary layers to reduce file complexity.

3. Close Unused Programs

If you’re running multiple apps, close those that aren’t necessary, especially resource-heavy programs (e.g., web browsers, video editors, etc.).

Use Task Manager (Windows) or Activity Monitor (Mac) to see which apps are using the most resources and close them.

4. Disable Graphics Processor (if needed)

Go to Edit > Preferences > Performance and uncheck Use Graphics Processor if Photoshop struggles with your graphics card.

This might reduce some features, but it can help Photoshop run smoother on older systems.

5. Update Photoshop and Your System

Make sure you’re using the latest version of Photoshop. Adobe regularly releases updates to improve performance and fix bugs.

Check for updates to your graphics drivers and operating system to make sure everything is flowing smoothly.

Pro Tip: If you’re still facing lag, try working on smaller sections of your project instead of the entire file at once. This can help reduce strain on your computer’s resources.
